Lake Bled in the northwest of Slovenia has to be seen to be believed. Nestled in the Julian Alps, this picturesque lake takes a pleasant two hours to circumnavigate, with the town of Bled nearby for a spot of lunch. In the centre of the lake sits Bled Island, which you can reach by boat rowed by a descendant of one of the 22 original families of Bled. For the religious or lovers of architecture, the church on the island is home to Gothic frescoes and a 99-step Baroque stairway.
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is the perfect example of German, Mediterranean, and Slovenian culture. The old town is a blend of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings, watched over by a stunning medieval castle. The beautiful gardens of Tivoli Park lead to the National Museum of Contemporary History, showing artefacts from a more modern history of Slovenia.
